In a hobby descended from European wargames, we sometimes struggle to imagine battle and violence as anything but what conquerors would make of them. How do our oppressors force us to encode violence into subaltern bodies, societies, and identities? What alternative approaches to combat have our panelists found in their cultures and mythologies, outside the strictures of empire—and how can we model those approaches in our games and communities? If a fight didn't mean harm and suffering, what else could it mean?
